July 17, 2009 ROMAN RUINS AND MOZART

-->
ROMAN RUINS AND MOZART
Friday, after another dramatic thunder and lightening storm that lasted all night long, it was still too wet to ride, so we took a driving trip and ended up in Avanches to see some Roman ruins. What a pleasant surprise we were in for. There is a large coliseum right in the town, and it could probably seat several thousand. They were have a Mozart concert series there at night, and it was all fixed up with modern seating and a huge picture of Mozart, so it didn’t really have the ancient feel. But the surprise was in the other ruins a bit out of town. It was a huge settlement with two fancy gates to enter the city, a theater which could seat 9000 people, a large bath house, some temples and several other structures. The signs were good and in English and the visit was very interesting.
